Learn not only to design construction projects, but also to manage them

What differentiates the ÉTS Master in Construction Engineering from other graduate programs in civil engineering? Here, you will learn not only to design construction projects, but also to manage them. Your studies will be supervised by teachers with real-world experience: Most of them have industry experience and do collaborative research work with commercial partners. In addition, by gaining a broad vision of specific construction industry issues, you will be able to make quicker, better informed decisions.

Are you a recent graduate in civil or construction engineering who wants to deepen your knowledge in a particular field, such as the development of sustainable materials, the impact of climate change on infrastructure, or building information modelling (BIM)? Or, are you already working in the field and looking to increase your expertise in construction design and management?

Whether you’re motivated by a desire to stand out in the job market, to get a promotion or to develop an innovation that will transform the industry, the ÉTS Master in Construction Engineering program will meet your needs.

What Will You Learn in the Master’s Program?

At ÉTS, our real-world practical Master’s programs build on a sound foundation of science. The majority of our professor-researchers have industry experience, and 60% of their research work is done in collaboration with businesses. So, throughout your training, you will be called on to resolve specific issues in the construction milieu, including:

  • Managing construction work;
  • Project management, both in terms of project organization and improvement, as well as in the resolution of technical problems;
  • Research, innovation and design of construction works and civil infrastructure;
  • Processes, methods and techniques for the design, implementation, evaluation, management, maintenance and rehabilitation of projects in buildings, road infrastructure, hydraulics and hydrology, geotechnical services, works of art, etc.

What Degrees Provide Admission to the Master’s in Construction Engineering?

Holders of an engineering diploma or a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction engineering or a related field are eligible for the master’s in construction engineering.

What’s the Difference between the Project Profile and the Research Profile?

The ÉTS Master's program includes two profiles. The thesis profile is focused on research and leads to the degree of Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.).  The project profile will allow you to specialize in a particular area of engineering and will lead to the degree of Master in Engineering (M. Eng.).

Master's Degree in Construction Engineering with Thesis (research profile)

Would you like to continue into doctoral studies? Or work in the industry and do research and development? This profile will meet your needs.

The research project counts for 30 of the 45 credits of this program.

Master's Degree in Construction Engineering with Project (project profile)

Do you want to specialize in a technical field? This profile is perfect for you! Both practical and theoretical courses will help you deepen your knowledge in your chosen area.

The program totals 45 credits, including 15 credits for the application project or 6 credits for the technical project.

Profile type

Master's Degree with Project (courses profile) M.Eng.

The Master's Degree with Projet is available in French only.

Master's Degree with Thesis (research profile) M.A.Sc.

Degree

Master of Applied Science (M.A.Sc.)

Program Objectives

The program deepens the student’s knowledge and expertise in the design, development of new technologies, analysis, processes and management of the construction and rehabilitation of building projects, road infrastructure, hydraulics and hydrology, geotechnology and works of art.

The thesis profile puts an accent on research work focused on a precise problem in construction engineering, while simultaneously furthering the candidate’s education.  This specialized training prepares graduates to better perform tasks related to research, to innovation and design, to the leadership of construction projects or project management, to their organization and improvement, and to resolve technical problems in construction projects underway.

Admission Requirements

Hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in civil engineering, construction engineering or a related field, with a grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (out of 4.3) or equivalent;

or have acquired the required knowledge, appropriate training and experience that is deemed to be relevant.

A candidate who is deemed to be inadequately prepared may be required to take upgrading courses or a preparatory course.

The candidate can be admitted on the basis of sufficient knowledge of English. In addition to the requirements of the program, the candidate must also successfully complete an out-of-program French course, appropriate to his or her level, to obtain a diploma.

Candidates admitted on the basis of English must also provide proof that a faculty member has agreed to act as their thesis supervisor.

Program Structure

  • 1 mandatory 3-hour long workshop (0 credit)
  • 1 mandatory activity (3 credits)
  • 3 or 4 optional activities (totalling at least 12 credits)
  • 1 thesis (30 credits)

What are the Career Prospects in Construction Engineering?

Did you know that master's graduates in engineering earn, on average, 10 per cent more than their counterparts with a bachelor? This was revealed in the Survey on the Remuneration of Engineering Pprofessionals in Québec (in French), conducted by Génium. In addition, some consulting engineering firms require their engineers to have a master’s.

Here are a few of the positions occupied by ÉTS graduates with a Master of Construction Engineering:

  • Project Manager
  • Design Engineer
  • Hydrogeology Consultant
  • Field Laboratory Supervisor
  • Manager of Hydroelectric Power Stations and Reservoirs
  • Hydrological Forecasting Specialist
  • Hydrometeorology Consultant

Some graduates choose to continue into doctoral studies or to pursue an academic career.

Professional Recognition

A master's in engineering can give you an experience credit of more than 12 months with the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ). To learn more, we invite you to consult the Regulation respecting other terms and conditions for the issuance of permits by the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec.

Have you found a thesis supervisor?

You must have chosen your thesis supervisor before the end of your first semester of master’s studies, because this is a condition of registration for the second semester. We strongly recommend you begin your search before your first semester of master’s studies. For more information, see Find a Thesis Supervisor
