ÉTS Language Policy at Graduate Level

Applicants for PhD programs with an Applied Research profile or Master's programs with thesis who have not studied in French or English in Canada must demonstrate adequate knowledge of English by successfully completing an English-language test, unless one of the following conditions applies:

  • Having successfully completed all secondary education in English (Academic transcript and SSGD required).
  • Having successfully completed the ministry exit exam in language and literature in CEGEP.
  • Having successfully completed an institutional exam administered by a Canadian university, certifying the applicant’s mastery of English (official proof of test results required).
  • Having obtained a university diploma that requires at least three years of university-level studies exclusively in English (diploma and transcripts required).
  • Having successfully completed one of the following tests with the expected result.

To be valid, these tests must have been done in the last 24 months.

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication)

  • 725 or more: Satisfactory linguistic competencies
  • Below 725: Admission refused

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

TOEFL iBT (Internet-based Test)

  • 75 or more: Satisfactory linguistic competencies
  • Below 75: Admission refused

TOEFL PBT (Paper-based Test)

  • 549 or more: Satisfactory linguistic competencies
  • Below 549: Admission refused

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

  • 6.5 or more: Satisfactory linguistic competencies
  • Below 6.5: Admission refused
