Funding is available for this project.

Quantum computing leverages superposition, entanglement, and other quantum phenomena to accelerate certain calculations. Quantum computing is a growing research area with many promising applications.

IBM's Condor chip, released in 2023, features over 1000 superconducting transmon qubits. However, it is difficult for students, and even experienced researchers, to understand the details of many quantum algorithms.

This research project will explore new ways to use information visualization to elucidate and understand quantum algorithms and quantum circuits. You will implement an interactive software tool with a graphical user interface, in Python or JavaScript or a similar language, using a library like Qiskit or Pennylane or Muqcs, allowing a user to easily define and/or simulate and/or visualize a quantum algorithm, possibly in the form of a quantum circuit. The goals of the project include releasing your tool as open source so it is useful to a maximum number of people, and to submit an article about your work to an international conference or journal.

Please contact professor McGuffin by email with your CV and an explanation of your relevant experience and your interest in the project.

Required knowledge

The candidate must have experience with programming graphical user interfaces (in Python, JavaScript, or C#) and must have an interest for quantum computing. Ideally, the candidate also has experience with web programming and/or information visualization, and knowledge of linear algebra.
