The LOPFA laboratory at the École de technologie supérieure is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with a background in metallurgy and mechanics and significant technical experience to take charge of a research project in characterization of parts manufactured by additive methods (LPBF).

Activities will focus on the microstructural and mechanical characterization of materials manufactured under different conditions. The postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of a major manufacturing process and enhance his or her technical, scientific and personal skills by working with state-of-the-art equipment and collaborating with experienced researchers and industrial partners.

Main responsibilities:

  • Management and planning of research projects
  • Mechanical testing and implementation of a fatigue testing campaign
  • Fractographic analysis by confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, EBSD, EDX, etc.
  • Defect analysis by tomography and statistical analysis (extreme values)
  • Metallographic sample preparation and microstructure characterization
  • Data analysis and drafting of technical reports and articles
  • Leading weekly meetings with industrial and academic partners to share project progress.
  • Technical supervision of interns or Master's/Doctorate students

Required knowledge

  • PhD in materials science, metallurgy or related field.
  • Significant experience in technical laboratory activities and materials characterization is required:
    • Metallographic preparation: cutting, mounting, (electro)polishing, ...
    • Microscopy: practical experience of OM and SEM/EDS, knowledge of EBSD
    • Mechanical testing: practical experience of tensile and fatigue testing
  • Knowledge of hardness testing, XRD, residual stress and corrosion measurements is a plus
  • Basic knowledge of NDT characterization (tomography) and extreme value statistics
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 and image analysis software (ImageJ, Dragonfly)
  • Fluency in French and English
  • Autonomy, curiosity, organization and proactivity are required.
